“Black Cube / White Album” curated by Max Dax
What happens when musicians adopt ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of images arise when visual artists get inspired by pop music? With works by over thirty international artists and musicians, the exhibition is presenting a broad range of art works that would not exist without the influx of music. Black Album/White Cube reveals the strong relationship between music, video and fine art with photographs, multimedia works, installations, sculptures, drawings and paintings.
Modern classics – including the painting by Emil Schult that became the cover of Kraftwerk's 1974 album Autobahn – are exhibited together with, among other things, photographs by Andrea Stappert, Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Sven Marquardt, paintings by Kim Gordon and Albert Oehlen and impressive video installations by Cyprien Gaillard and Arthur Jafa. One of the highlights of the exhibition is Rutherford Chang’s ‘We Buy White Albums’, the reenactment of a records store that exclusively displays more than 2,000 copies of the Beatles’ ‘White Album’, arranged by their serial numbers.
The exhibition is realized in collaboration with Deichtorhallen Hamburg and guest curator Max Dax.
